Farming central to climate change, UN told

Farming should be a key part of global legislation on climate change, industry leaders have told United Nations officials.

The leaders spoke out as about 350 delegates met at a fringe meeting during the UN climate change summit in Copenhagen.

FARMERS, growers and industry leaders have joined together to develop a major new skills strategy to ensure the long term future of agriculture.

Delegates attending the Future of Farming Conference in Stoneleigh Park last week concluded if farmers were expected to feed a growing population in future years, they must be given the human resources necessary.

Lantra, the Sector Skills Council for the environmental and land-based industries, hosted the conference where debate centred around the progress of their AgriSkills Strategy.

New university role to safeguard food

The first academic post dedicated to food security in the UK is being created at Aberystwyth University.

A lecturer specialising in sustainable agriculture will spearhead research designed to safeguard the country’s food supplies.

Farmer confirmed as head of Natural England

Oxfordshire farmer Poul Christensen has been confirmed as chairman of Natural England

DEFRA secretary Hilary Benn made the announcement on Thursday (3 December).

"Poul has shown his passionate commitment to the natural environment and to protecting and enhancing our habitats and wildlife," he said.

"I greatly look forward to working with him."

Growing demand creates opportunities for UK dairy industry

FUTURE opportunities exist in dairying, but there are barriers to be overcome before those opportunities can be fully exploited.

That was the view of NFU president, Peter Kendall, who told the NFU’s Northern Dairy Conference he wanted to convey the message there were plenty of positives.
