FARMERS, growers and industry leaders have joined together to develop a major new skills strategy to ensure the long term future of agriculture.

Delegates attending the Future of Farming Conference in Stoneleigh Park last week concluded if farmers were expected to feed a growing population in future years, they must be given the human resources necessary.  

Lantra, the Sector Skills Council for the environmental and land-based industries, hosted the conference where debate centred around the progress of their AgriSkills Strategy.

Oxfordshire farmer Poul Christensen has been confirmed as chairman of Natural England

DEFRA secretary Hilary Benn made the announcement on Thursday (3 December).

"Poul has shown his passionate commitment to the natural environment and to protecting and enhancing our habitats and wildlife," he said.

"I greatly look forward to working with him."
